Underpinning - Nordic Practice

Today we wanted to tell you about this book, Underpinning - Nordic Practice. It has been truly helpful for us with this project, so we thought you would like it too. Here's inrtoduction to the book!

Underpinning – Nordic Practice is a book edited by Jouko Lehtonen with articles written by ten other authors. All of them are Finnish experts of their field with years of practice. We’ve met two of these authors ourselves and they are highly professional. We have learned very much from them and they really know their specialties. The book was published in April 2009 but is based on Finnish version from 2006.

Underpinning includes history and different areas of foundation work. There are 6 main parts from introduction to underpinning methods and case studies.

In Introduction history of underpinning and piling is discussed alongside with early methods of making foundations (including Mega piles, log crafts and concrete soles). Also the stages of foundation renovating are listed and explained here.

The second chapter, Geotechnical engineering for underpinning, has different types of geotechnical surveys that should be done when underpinning. These include for example groundwater tests, which are extremely important especially when working with wood foundations and soil investigations to see what there is in the ground (soil-type, rocks, roots etc.). Also geotechnical capacity of piles and jet grouting, which is strengthening of the soil, are discussed in this chapter.

Structural engineering for underpinning is mainly about piles, pile types and how to decide what kind of piles to use. It also explains different ways to transfer the loads from old structures to the new ones, and choosing the right way to do it. There is stuff about investigating the old structures and how to lift and straighten buildings.

In the Underpinning methods, surprisingly introduces underpinning methods like reinforcing the foundation with steel piles. There is also different kinds of methods to use for underpinning including jet grouting, site practice and geopolymeric applications (injecting chemicals to the soil which will expand and become ballast).

Chapter number five is about problems that come from historical and architectonic issues. Historical status of the building can forbid to chance its façade, but that’s not such a big problem with underpinning. Architectonic and historical issues still explains that in some cases “foundations are valuable because they tell their own story”. This chapter also has some points how to analyse if the foundations have architectural value.

Last part of the book is Cases, which shows some underpinning projects in Turku. Everything from the ground type to the piling type is told here. An example of these cases is The Swedish Theatre of Turku (built 1839), it had subsided three steps before it was re-piled in 2004-2005.

Underpinning is very interesting book with lots of pictures and knowledge. We recommend it to everyone who is interested about the subject! We are trying to get PDF version of it, so stay tuned!

The survey is HERE.

The survey is NOW accessible through this link under the text.
The survey will only last for 10 days. So please take some time to fill in the survey. This survey consists of 11 questions in which you will be asked general questions about yo...ur relation to micropiling and micropiling itself, after this there will be 2 feedback questions for us. This will be related to this page and what you would like to see here. Please fill in the survey only once so that our information will be correct. Max time 15 minutes.
We are very curious to what you think of micropiling and how you would like to engage in micropiling on this page! And don’t be shy to write a little more if you have good ideas to help us make this a wonderful page.

So what do you want to see on micropiling?

Hi Micropilers,

In this blog we want to talk about a survey we made for you. As you have read in our last blog our project is to increase the knowledge about micropiling. While doing this we want people from all over the world to be engaged in creating a network between companies, engineers, universities and Facebook communities.

For this to work we want to ask you, the current active people on this page, to answer a few simple questions about micropiling and your idea on this concept. The survey consist of a few questions which will take 10-15 minutes to answer. We would like you to answer the questions and to be detailed on why you choose your answer. This way we know what sort of work we need to do to make this page interesting for you!
With this information we want to make this page fun, informative, interesting and helpful for your daily and working life. We would like to see you ask questions on the Facebookpage that your colleagues could help you answer. Next to that we want to see you post new ideas about micropiling to make this concept even better and more known around the world. So please take a little bit of time to fill in this survey.

The rules
These are the rules for the survey:
- The survey will be up on 23-10-2014. 8:30 GMT+0.00.
- The survey is only up for 10 days, so reserve a spot in your agenda to answer these questions.
- The information you give will stay with us and will only be used to improve the facebook page.
- Please explain the answer you give to help us by giving us as much information as possible.
- Get Engaged!

We are very curious on which companies and countries are currently engaged in micropiling. We would like to know when and where you use it and why micropiling works for you!
If you can’t wait to get engaged please leave a comment below on what you think of our project and give us tips on what you would like to see posted. After this we might contact you to talk about micropiling, the page and global communication a bit more.

Greetings,

TMRT

We have a project to do

This blog is part of student project, where our goal is to increase knowledge about micropiles. The project is ordered by International Society for Micropiles and done in Turku University of Applied Sciences

Our main team consists of students from Italy, Netherlands and Finland and some teachers of TUAS. All the students are studying Civil Engineering in the Master Degree.

The main goal of this is to create a real network between students, teachers, companies and employees in micropiles sector, to solve problems, share information and advices on this fascinating topic; it will be an useful and active source of information for everyone. For this purpose, we want to get the Facebook page of ISM more active. We also created this blog and our Twitter to serve more people.

In our blog we will publish posts and researches about micropiles and progress of our journey at least once a month, for a start. After out project our social media enterprise will be handed back to the people of ISM to handle.

Now we want to ask you, what do you want to know about micropiles or see in our blog/Twitter/Facebook? Submit your ideas on comment box below or to out e-mail societyofmicropile@gmail.com!! We really appreciate your ideas and comments about everything.
